South
Toward Home is a non-profit organization created in response
to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Now
that the larger relief organizations have affected their
roles, STH looks to fill the gaps, as there is still much
that is left undone.
South
Toward Home works in collaboration with several other organizations
to repair and rebuild the Gulf Coast. To date our work has
focused entirely on the town of Pass Christian, Mississippi.
To help a community recover, we must care for the individuals.
As we all know, Katrina did not discriminate, and has left
victims of every description in its wake.
Under
the leadership of Executive Director Amy Hardee and by teaming
with other organizations, STH has been involved in helping
hundreds of families get back in their homes. We have also
participated in other projects within the community including
debris clean
up and tree work to help “the Pass” recover from
the storm. Now that we are closing the repair phase of recovery
we are entering into the building phase. We are focused on
building homes for many elderly, disabled and single parent
families, many of whom are still living in trailers.
I’m Shirley Biagas, and I’ve been living in Mississippi for seventy-eight years – my whole life. I’m widowed, but I have a daughter, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. I’m a member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Pass Christian.
